JOB TITLE 

Special Education Teacher

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT 

Reporting to the Head of the Accommodation and Programming Department, the Special Education Teacher leads various activities for the residents. They help the Clinical Program Officer assess the needs of residents in accordance with the home’s mission and mandate.

MAIN RESPONSABILITIES 

Supported by a research program, the Special Education Teacher will have the opportunity to participate in the development of support practices for residents. They will make observations, develop an understanding of each resident’s situation, and collect information to help assess the residents’ needs, abilities, lifestyle habits and behaviours and actively follow up on care. The incumbent will, among other things:

  • Determine the objectives of the care plan with the psychoeducator
  • Draft and implement related action plans
  • Plan activities, and creates materials and visual tools to support residents according to their needs
  • Assist with hygiene and meals
  • Use alternative communication strategies (PECS, TEACCH)
  • Develop and complete scoring and monitoring grids
  • Communicate with parents at least once a week
  • Write progress and observation notes
  • Work as part of a time and communicate relevant information to colleagues
  • Accompany residents to medical appointments and ensure follow-up
  • Distribute medication under Bill 90
  • Ensure residents receive support in their daily tasks and routines

REQUIRED TRAINING 

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field of special education (psychoeducation, social service or other) or a diploma of college studies (DEC) in special education or social work. Specific training in the reality of people on the autism spectrum is a considerable asset.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience working with people on the autism spectrum and/or with mental health issues
  • Experience working with families and caregivers and/or in a residence offering a long-term living environment (asset)
  • Have the well-being of residents at heart, have concern for a job well done, treat others with dignity and ensure the safety of the individuals receiving support
  • Possess certain qualities such as: benevolence, good communication and listening skills, empathy, versatility, independence and the ability to build relationships based on trust
  • First aid/CPR skills (asset)
  • Training certificate for the administration of medication and invasive care assistance (Bill 90) (asset)
  • Therapeutic intervention during aggressive behaviour (ITCA) (asset)
  • Valid driver's license
